Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
is a manufacturing process that uses electrical sparks to remove material from a workpiece. It is typically used to create complex shapes or to machine materials that are difficult to work with using traditional methods, such as hardened steel or superalloys.
EDM works by using a shaped tool called an electrode, which is made of a conductive material such as copper or graphite. The electrode is connected to a power supply and is positioned near the workpiece. When an electrical current is applied to the electrode, a series of sparks, or electrical discharges, occur between the electrode and the workpiece. These sparks vaporize a small amount of material from the surface of the workpiece, creating a spark erosion effect.
There are two main types of EDM: sinker EDM and wire EDM. Sinker EDM creates complex shapes in a workpiece by gradually sinking the electrode into the material. Wire EDM is used to cut precise, thin slices of material, typically with a thickness of 0.1 mm or less.
EDM is an exact and accurate manufacturing process used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturing. It is beneficial for producing parts with intricate geometries or tight tolerances. However, it can be a slow process and is generally only used for small-scale production.
